Music Therapy offers a creative and safe space for children and young people to express themselves. Our HCPC registered music therapist is able to work with a range of people including those with neurodiverse conditions, mental health difficulties, and developmental delay.

What is this service?

Music therapy is a highly recognised intervention, offering children and young people a safe and protected space in which they can work on their psychological, emotional, cognitive, physical, social and communicative needs (British Association of Music Therapy). This includes but is not limited to:

  • Children/ young people with learning disabilities/ developmental delay

  • Children/ young people who identify with having a neurodiverse condition

  • Children/ young people facing mental health difficulties

  • Children/ young people with behavioural challenges

  • Children/ young people with trauma/ attachment difficulties

    Therapist and client take part in music making, listening, and play in order to establish a trusting therapeutic relationship, which additionally offers clients an alternative means of communication besides the verbal.

Sessions are clients led and strengths based, using the clients strengths to guide and structure sessions. Activities can vary week on week but may include improvising on a range of instruments, song writing, singing, music listening, and using music technology.

Through music, children and young people are able to work towards therapeutic goals which may include:

  • Working on communication styles

  • Increasing emotional literacy

  • Self- regulation

  • Self-expression/ identity expression

  • Working to process trauma

  • Decreasing anxiety/ depression symptoms

  • Building and sustaining relationships

  • Increasing speech and language ability

Music therapy can be useful for a range of clients presenting with a variety of challenges and our music therapist has vast experience with children and young people of all backgrounds.
