Human Stories

Human Stories is a heartfelt initiative by The WILDE Foundation that shines a light on one woman each month — our living book. Our nurturing and empowering creative space, women are encouraged to give voice to their stories. Through writing, whether it’s personal reflections, it's about wellbeing.

What is this service?

The WILDE Foundation is a charity rooted in the transformative power of literature — to explore, to express, and, most importantly, to heal. We believe storytelling is more than a creative act; it is a lifeline, a mirror, and a means of liberation. Through writing, many of the women we work with discover the voice they never knew they had — one that is bold, resilient, and unapologetically their own. For some, it is the first time they have ever been invited to speak without interruption. For others, it is the first time they have been believed. And for many, it is the first time they have been able to place their pain outside of themselves and look at it with clarity, compassion, and courage.

Our Human Stories Women’s Group meets monthly, offering a warm and supportive space where women connect, share, and heal. It is a circle built on trust, confidentiality, and the understanding that every woman carries a story that has shaped her. Each month, one woman becomes the living book — sharing her journey of survival, strength, and self‑discovery with others. She stands not as a performer, but as a witness to her own life, opening a chapter that may have been hidden, silenced, or misunderstood for years. Through these honest, heart‑centred conversations, women bond deeply, lessen feelings of isolation and loneliness, manage depression, and begin to recover from the trauma of domestic and childhood sexual abuse. They also find comfort in sharing their grief — grief for loved ones, for lost years, for the girl they once were, and for the woman they are still becoming.

Human Stories is not therapy, yet it is profoundly therapeutic. It is not a lecture, yet every session teaches something essential about resilience, womanhood, and the quiet bravery required to rebuild a life. The women who attend come from different backgrounds, cultures, and generations, but they are united by a shared truth: healing happens in community. Healing happens when someone says, “I’ve been there too.” Healing happens when a woman realises she is not alone in her pain, her confusion, her shame, or her hope.

In this space, women learn to reclaim the narratives that were taken from them. Many arrive carrying stories that were shaped by others — by abusers, by institutions, by family members who silenced them, or by a society that dismissed their experiences. Through writing and sharing, they begin to rewrite those narratives on their own terms. They learn that their story does not end with what was done to them; it continues with what they choose to do next. They learn that their voice is not fragile; it is powerful. They learn that their truth is not something to hide; it is something to honour.

The Living Book tradition is at the heart of this work. When a woman becomes the Living Book, she is not simply telling a story — she is offering a piece of her life as a gift to others. She is saying, “This is who I am. This is what I survived. This is what I learned. And this is how I am still standing.” The women listening do not judge, correct, or question. They hold space. They listen with their whole selves. They allow the story to settle in the room, to breathe, to be felt. And in that shared silence, something extraordinary happens: healing becomes collective.

Over time, the group becomes a sisterhood. Women who once walked into the room with their heads lowered now sit taller, speak louder, and write with a confidence they never imagined. They celebrate each other’s breakthroughs — the first time someone writes about her trauma, the first time someone reads her work aloud, the first time someone says, “I am ready to let this go.” They also hold each other through the difficult moments — when memories resurface, when grief feels heavy, when the past feels too close. No one carries anything alone.

The impact of Human Stories extends far beyond the monthly sessions. Women begin to use writing as a tool for emotional regulation, reflection, and empowerment. They journal more. They write letters to their younger selves. They craft poems that honour their survival. They begin to imagine futures that once felt impossible. Some go on to write books, start blogs, or perform at our festivals. Others simply find peace in knowing that their story matters — even if it is only ever shared within the safety of our circle.

The WILDE Foundation exists because we believe in the power of women’s voices - especially the voices that have been silenced, dismissed, or ignored. We believe that healing is not linear, not quick, and not easy, but it is possible when women are given the space, the tools, and the community to explore their inner worlds. We believe that literature — whether written, spoken, or shared — is one of the most powerful forms of healing available to us. And we believe that every woman, regardless of her past, deserves the chance to write a new chapter.

Human Stories is a testament to what happens when women gather with intention. It is a reminder that storytelling is not just an art form; it is a form of survival. It is a reminder that healing does not happen in isolation; it happens in community. And it is a reminder that every woman carries a story worth telling — a story that can inspire, transform, and heal not only herself, but everyone who listens.
